I love the art of filmmaking. I took this course as a requirement to transfer like most people do however, that wasn’t the only, nor was it the most profound reason why I took film studies. As a cinephile I am infatuated with the amount of work and detail that goes into creating a piece of art that most people take for granted. I knew that by taking this course, I could learn more about the elements of film so that I could hopefully apply them to my future career in film production. This course has taught me the terminology I needed so that I could verbally express what I hopefully get to do one day. Film has five elements, each as important as the next. Narrative is the organization of events that occur within a film. The mise en scene is important for visually conveying ideas that can’t be expressed verbally and also to create the look and feel of a film. Like mise en scene, cinematography helps convey ideas however it does it through specific techniques of shooting. Editing joins images and elicits emotion through tempo and timing. Sound, an element that is often forgotten, also helps set the mood of the film and convey important audio cues in a film.
